Herbs to Clean Urinary Tracts

The urinary tract is comprised of the kidneys, bladder, urethra and prostate (in males). It is important to practice proper hygiene, drink plenty of fluids and never delay emptying the bladder. While the bladder flushes out the majority of bacteria in the urinary tract during urination, some bacteria can be left behind, paving the way for infection. Keeping the urinary tract clean and flushed is essential to preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Typically, UTIs are caused by enteric bacteria, but can also be caused by sexually transmitted infections, mycobateria and fungi. UTIs are typically more common in women, although infections are increasingly seen in men over the age of 50 due to increased frequency of prostate disease. Antibiotics are often prescribed as first line therapy for UTIs, although there are non-prescriptive routes and herbal remedies that can be used as prophylactic measures to maintain a clean urinary tract. There are many herbs that can be used to clean the urinary tract; however, the three highlighted here are: cranberry, uva ursi and saw palmetto.

Cranberry

Cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an anti-inflammatory herbal medicine with strong antioxidant properties. Teas, extracts, capsules, tablets, juices and other food products are produced from the berries and used for medicinal purposes. Cranberries are typically used to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Although the exact mechanism is unknown, studies have shown that the proanthocyanidins in cranberries may prevent the binding of infectious-causing bacteria to the wall of the urinary tract. Please consult with a practitioner before taking cranberry as a treatment for a UTI, especially in persons at risk for uric-acid kidney stones.

Uva Ursi

Uva ursi (bearberry) is another herb whose leaves are used in medicinal preparations to prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Uva ursi acts as a mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and helps to clean the urinary tract. Uva ursi is packed with tannins, which have an astringent effect. Uva ursi is not recommended for children or pregnant or nursing women. Consult with a practitioner for further questions or concerns about the use of uva ursi.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a botanical with fat-soluble components used by men to keep a clean urinary tract and to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). There is a direct correlation between BPH and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Symptoms range from mild to more severe and include urgency of urination, leakage and nocturia. There are other conditions associated with BPH, such as urinary retention, which also pose a threat to keeping the urinary tract clean and free of UTIs. Please consult with a practitioner for further questions or concerns.
