People are always looking for the next quick fix when it comes to weight loss. Some believe drinking a combination of vinegar and water can do the trick. Apple cider vinegar, in particular, is the go-to home remedy ingredient. However, a lack of scientific evidence and relevant studies makes it difficult to assert that drinking vinegar and water will do much of anything for your weight loss efforts.

Vinegar

Vinegar possesses numerous beneficial qualities including antibacterial and antifungal properties. This is due to the acetic acid content. In fact, a study conducted at the Central Research Institute of the Mizkan Group Corporation as reported on The Vinegar Institute website showed that mice fed acetic acid in conjunction with a high fat diet gained 10 percent less fat than mice that were not given acetic acid.

Function

Drinking a combination of vinegar and water may also help to suppress the appetite, according to the Global Healing Center. In fact, vinegar may encourage fats to dissolve in the body, meaning a decreased likelihood of fat accumulation.

Research

Very few studies have been conducted to understand the relationship between apple cider vinegar and weight loss. However, a study conducted at Arizona State University and published in the "Diabetes Care" journal showed that apple cider vinegar lowered glucose levels and reduced fat accumulation.

Conflicting Information and Hazards

Vinegar is present in a variety of foods and is generally harmless. However, drinking a mixture of vinegar and water on a regular basis could cause problems. According to registered dietician Katherine Zeratsky of MayoClinic.com, vinegar can cause reactions with prescription drugs like insulin and could cause dangerously low potassium levels. It may also cause throat irritation. Zeratsky recommends adopting a healthy diet and exercise plan to see the most effective weight loss results.
