How to Remove Eyebrow Hair

Eyebrows, when untamed, can draw negative attention to your brows and take away from beautiful eyes or a new hairdo. Men and women both need to groom and style their eyebrows to obtain a cleaner, more sophisticated appearance. A variety of options will remove excess eyebrow hair.

Step 1

Comb your eyebrows to see if they need trimming. Cosmetic consultants at Eye Make Up Tips report that not everyone needs to remove eyebrow hair. If it can be avoided, it should be. Use a small-toothed comb to brush eyebrows up and over to the ends of the eyes. Stray hairs often fall into place. Use a small, sharp pair of scissors to trim any hairs that don't fall into the brow, but continue to stick up.

Step 2

Draw the ideal eyebrow over your eyebrow hairs with a dark eye pencil before you begin removing hair, to get an idea of the shape that you want to achieve. Once you've got the basic shape in place, maintenance can easily be achieved with simple plucking.

Step 3

Use tweezers that have a solid grip. Remove eyebrow hair following a hot shower or after applying a hot towel to your face to open up the pores and make the process less painful.

Step 4

Pull the skin beside your eyebrow taut before plucking. Grab the end of the hair you want to remove with the end of the tweezers and pull quickly. Pull in the same direction that the hair grows. Start at the lowest hairs under the eyebrows and work up.

Step 5

Apply a wax removal strip to your brow area to pull out all the unwanted hairs at once. Eyebrow waxing kits have a hole cut out where the eyebrow is placed, report beauty consultants at Eye Make Up Tips. Press down on the strip and leave in place as directed on the package. Pull off the strip after the required time. Pull with one quick motion to avoid additional pain.

Step 6

Shave unwanted eyebrow hair with a special eyebrow-shaving tool, which is smaller and safer for the tender eye region than a regular razor. Noxzema is one company that produces small razors and lotions for those tender over-the-eye areas. Make sure the eyebrow is wet, and use a safe, hypoallergenic, shaving lotion. Carefully shave the area and apply moisturizer immediately afterward to avoid redness and ingrown hairs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Look at pictures in magazines to find an eyebrow shape that appeals to you. Use that picture as a guide to shaping and trimming your own brows.
  • Laser hair removal uses intense heat of a pulsed ray of light to burn out the unwanted hair. While laser hair removal may eventually result in permanent removal of unwanted eyebrow hair, doctors at the Mayo Clinic warn patients that it can take a number of sessions to achieve desired results. Though complications are rare, they can include scarring, blistering and changes in skin color. In addition, some hairs are resistant to laser hair removal.
