Inderal is a prescription medication -- the generic form is called propanolol -- commonly ordered for high blood pressure, chest pain and irregular heartbeat. It works by impacting certain nerve impulses in the body, slowing down the heart and decreasing blood pressure, thereby increasing blood and oxygen flow to the heart. There are some considerations to follow when talking Inderal.

Administration

Inderal may be taken with or without food, but must be taken using the same method and at the same time each day. Because food increases the absorption of this medication, there is a greater amount circulating in your body when taken with food. Consistency is the key. If you take it with meals, it must be taken every day at the same time with a meal. Likewise, if you prefer to take it on an empty stomach, be consistent and take it daily on an empty stomach.

Dietary Considerations

It is important to avoid foods that may interfere with the effectiveness of Inderal. If your physician has placed you on a low-sodium diet to help lower blood pressure, continuing to indulge in high-sodium foods will decrease the effectiveness of Inderal on your blood pressure.

Food Interactions

There are certain foods that when taken with Inderal will change its performance. Foods high in protein should not be taken at the same time as Inderal, because they can interrupt the metabolism of the medication. Alcohol will intensify drowsiness or dizziness when taken with Inderal. Alcohol should not be consumed while taking Inderal. Tobacco has also been determined to decrease the effectiveness of Inderal. Those using tobacco products should consult their physicians before taking Inderal.

Side Effects

While Inderal benefits those prescribed, it does have various side effects. Side effects include shortness of breath, blue fingers or toes, swollen ankles or feet, mental or mood changes such as depression, numbness or tingling of arms or legs, very slow heartbeat, fainting, decreased sexual ability, unexplained or sudden weight gain and increased thirst or urination. Contact your doctor if any of these side effects occur.
