5 Things You Need to Know About Driving In Golf

1. Less Force, Not More

One of the biggest misconceptions about driving a golf ball is that the more powerful the swing the farther the ball will fly. Swinging the club too strenuously will result in poor mechanics and a poorly hit drive. Concentrate on a smooth, efficient swing and let the golf club do its job.

2. Short and Sweet Swing

The longer the swing the greater the chance of losing balance and mechanics during the drive. A shorter, more compact swing is better-especially for beginning golfers. The shorter distance provides less chance for error and greater ability to control the accuracy of the drive. After all, what good is a mammoth drive if the result is an unplayable second shot?

3. Weight Transfer

One of the most effective ways to control and manage the drive in golf is proper weight distribution. When you address the golf ball make sure to balance your weight evenly between both your legs, keep your knees bent and the weight equally loaded on your heel and toes. Once you center your body over the swing let the club flow through the golf ball. As you start the swing transfer the weight to the back until the top of the swing. As you bring the club down move your weight through the shot.

4. Driving Stance

When establishing your driving stance make sure your shoulders are back and your upper body straight. The shoulders should be straight and relaxed. Too much tension in the shoulders can throw off the swing and end up costing valuable strokes.

5. Driving Range

Perhaps more than any other sport, golf requires practice to become proficient. While all the swing tips and hints are great, nothing can replace the repetition that a driving range provides. In addition, if you are having particular trouble with your swing you may ask someone at the range if they employ professional swing coaches. While the good coaches can be expensive, their knowledge and expertise may save you many hours of frustration on the course.
