While snowboarding jumps come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, their basic function remains the same. The snowboarding jump allows you to perform aerial stunts that involve rotating and grabbing your board. Larger jumps are designed for more advanced maneuvers such as flips and off-axis spins. An unbalanced approach can have disastrous effects. Losing control of your snowboard while airborne may result in bone-crunching falls or serious head trauma. The Snow Professor website recommends practicing your approach on a smaller jump that features a 1- to 2-foot takeoff.

Step 1

Point the nose of your snowboard toward the bottom of the jump.

Step 2

Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to balance your riding stance. Distribute your body weight evenly between the front and rear binding of your snowboard.

Step 3

Lean onto the toe or heel edge of your snowboard to prevent increased drag.

Step 4

Extend your arms to avoid losing balance, and keep your shoulders parallel with your snowboard during your approach.

Step 5

Lean onto your back foot as you approach the apex of the ramp to use the tail of your snowboard as a springboard.

Tips and Warnings

  • Approach the jump with a moderate amount of speed to avoid overshooting the landing.
  • Look around to ensure no obstacles or other riders are in your path.
