Weight gain during pregnancy is a big concern for many women. Those who start out a pregnancy overweight or obese may be particularly interested in losing weight, or minimizing the total weight gain. Natural fat burners, including herbs and teas, may seem safe during pregnancy since the word "natural" seems harmless to so many people. However, supplements of all types should be used cautiously during pregnancy and only under the direct supervision of a midwife or obstetrician.

Unknown Safety

Many herbs, including fat burning supplements, have not been tested on pregnant women. Doctors do not know what effect these supplements have on the developing fetus or the health of the mother. Herbal supplements aren't regulated by the FDA, so there is also no guarantee that the fat burners actually contain the ingredients listed, or have them in the amount listed on the product label.

Weight Loss During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, most women are expected to gain 25 to 35 pounds. Women who are overweight may be able to gain less and still have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Pregnancy requires a nutritious diet in order to consume the necessary vitamins and nutrients for the health of the mother's body and optimal fetal development. Actively trying to lose weight during pregnancy is generally discouraged to avoid putting the baby at risk for complications.

Risks

Herbs like blue and black cohosh and pennyroyal are known to stimulate the uterus and may cause premature contractions that can lead to preterm labor and delivery. Natural fat burners contain a variety of ingredients that may have this effect on the uterus. Ephedra can induce contractions. Some herbal fat burners, such as guarana, contain caffeine that may increase the risk of miscarriage. The March of Dimes explains that caffeine may also contribute to lower birth weight and increased neonatal heart and respiratory rates at birth.

Considerations

If you are pregnant, or thinking of becoming pregnant and are concerned about your weight, talk to your midwife or doctor about your concerns. Although natural fat burning pills are not an option during pregnancy, your healthcare provider may be able to help you with a nutrition plan to make sure you do not gain an excessive amount of weight. Depending on your weight, you may be advised that a smaller weight gain is appropriate for your situation. Remember that although technically you are eating for two, it's not the portion sizes of two adults. Choose nutritious and healthy foods and avoid empty calories that are contained in soft drinks and junk food.
