The bump in volleyball, also called the forearm pass, is one of the fundamental approaches to hitting a volleyball. The bump pass can be used to field a pass from the opposing team and bring it under control. It can also be used to pass to teammates or to send the volleyball back over the net if you are in a rush. The bump technique is learned easily, but it can be difficult to perform consistently since the ball needs to hit the forearms accurately to travel in the intended direction.
Step 1
Make a fist with one hand and place the fingers and palms of the other hand around the fingers of your fist, placing the thumbs alongside one another.
Step 2
Spread your legs to about shoulder-width apart. Bend and flex your knees to give yourself more bumping power. Stick your hips out behind you.
Step 3
Extend your arms straight out. Do not allow the elbows to bend -- this will weaken your bumping power and hurt your accuracy.
Step 4
Strike the ball with your lower forearms near the wrists, but not on your wrists or hands. As the ball approaches you, extend your legs to generate bumping power from the lower body. Once contact is made with the volleyball, your hands should be pointed in the direction you want the volleyball to go.
