Eating Ice and Iron Deficiency

The craving to eat ice, medically known as pagophagia, and is a variable of a form of eating disorder called pica. People who have pica have a strong urge to eat substances that are either non-nutritive or possibly hazardous to their health, such as dirt or paper. Eating ice can be associated with iron deficiency in some people.

Symptom of Deficiency

Eating ice may be a symptom of iron deficiency, in part because the ice helps manage another symptom of the problem. People who suffer from a lack of iron can develop inflammation of the tongue, which becomes sore. Dr. Ruben A. Mesa of MayoClinic.com explains that you might the craving to chew on ice to benefit from it anesthetizing properties.

Cause of Deficiency

According to the Linus Pauling Institute, pica in the form of ice cubes may be a reasonable cause for iron deficiency in some cases. Ice does not contain nutrients of any kind. The constant chewing on ice can put you at risk for malnutrition if you eat ice to the exclusion of iron-rich foods such as beef, chicken, tofu or kidney beans.

Seriousness of Pica

Pica can be a serious illness and is classified as an eating disorder. Eating ice is less serious than eating other substances that can be poisonous, but is still cause for concern. Chewing on ice can put you at risk for damaging your teeth, and can be a sign of not only iron deficiency but obsessive-compulsive disorder or stress. Speak to your doctor about your urges to eat ice.

Serum Iron Testing

Iron testing is a quick and easy way to determine if your levels are low. Your doctor may order a blood test if you suffer from pagophagia or other signs of iron deficiency anemia, including shortness of breath and fatigue. Normal iron levels range from 60 to 170 micrograms per dL. You may be required to take iron supplements if your levels measure below 60 micrograms per dL.
