Parathyroidectomy & Diet

A parthyroidectomy is a surgery to remove all or some of your parathyroid gland, which regulates the levels of different minerals in your blood. There is no set long-term diet after the surgery, but it is important to make sure that you get enough calcium in your diet after the procedure.

Parathyroid Gland

The parathyroid gland is actually four small glands located on the top of the thyroid gland. The parathyroid glands are different than the thyroid gland and have entirely different functions within the human body. The parathyroid gland secretes parathyroid hormone, which helps regulate the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. These two minerals are important for a variety of functions, including maintaining the health of your bones.

Indications For Parathyroidectomy

A parathyroidectomy is typically a result of an overactive parathyroid gland, also known as hyperparathyroidism. If you develop hyperparathyroidism, the amount of calcium in your blood rises. Although calcium is important for your body's health, too much calcium in your blood can cause problems with your nerves and muscles, including your heart. A parathyroidectomy involves the removal of the abnormal parathyroid glands.

Initial Diet

Immediately after your parathyroidectomy, your throat will probably be sore and you may need to consume a bland diet that consists primarily of easily digested foods such as Gatorade, tea, crackers, water, soup, coffee and gelatin. You can gradually increase the variety in your diet over the next several days as you recover. You should avoid hard foods while your throat is tender or sore.

Long-Term Diet

There is no special diet required after a parathyroidectomy. However, you may need to increase the amount of calcium you consume or take calcium supplements to prevent a drop in blood calcium levels. Otherwise, follow a healthy and well-balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean sources of protein, whole grains and dairy.
