Yohimbe tribulus is a combination of two traditional herbal supplements that may enhance male sexual performance and physical strength. Scientific research backs up some of the claims of this combination but it may not be ideal for everyone. See your doctor before starting any new medications or supplements.

Facts

Yohimbe tribulus is an over-the-counter combination herbal supplement that has claims to increase male sex drive, sexual performaacne, hormone production, energy levels and muscle mass. It is a combination of extracts of yohimbe bark and Tribulus terrestris or puncture vine. Yohimbe bark contains the compound yohimbine, which was been used for many years as an aphrodisiac according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The April 2003 issue of the "Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" states that the active compound in tribulus is likely protodioscin, which may increase muscle mass and male sexual function.

Benefits

The pharmacological effects of yohimbine and tribulus are well documented. It strongly interacts with alpha adrenergic receptors which likely explains its effects on male sexual function according to the August 2002 issue of the "International Journal of Impotence Research." The article also suggests that the compound is not effective in some patients due to its counter effect of relaxing tissues that maintain erections. In addition, research in the May 2007 issue of the "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research" states that tribulus may increase male sex hormone production and muscle strength.

Possible Side Effects

Since yohimbe tribulus contains at least two active compounds there is an increased chance of side effects. The side effects of both yohimbine and tribulus are described in Drugs.com. Side effects of yohimbine include headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, dizziness, and panic attacks. Effects of tribulus extract are less common but may include upset stomach and isolated incidents of gynecomastia, or enlargement of the breasts in men as described in the October 2004 issue of the journal "Breast."

Avoiding Side Effects

To avoid possible side effects of yohimbe tribulus, adhere to the proper dosing procedure included in the package. Side effects are more likely to occur if you take too much of the supplement to attempt to acheive an enhanced effect. Since this is an over-the-counter supplement and not a controlled substance, discuss with your doctor the impact on your body and the possible unintended interactions such as interference with the action of other medications.
