Sanctura XR is a medication used for treating overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms including urinary frequency, urgency and incontinence, says Drugs.com. A capsule is taken daily with water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour prior to a meal. As with any medication, Sanctura XR has the potential for side effects. EMedTV.com reports that few users will experience side effects.

Common Side Effects

Unless persistent or overly bothersome, the most common side effects of Sanctura XR are considered harmless. These effects may include constipation, dry mouth, dry eyes, gas, nasal dryness, nausea or upset stomach, as reported by Drugs.com. EMedTV.com suggests up to 7.3 percent of individuals who use the medication may experience a bladder infection. Other possible side effects include a cold in 2.9 percent of patients or the flu in up to 2.2 percent.

Serious Side Effects

Individuals who experience serious side effects should seek medical attention. These side effects may include pain in the chest, darkened urine, trouble urinating, fainting, rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, mental changes, mood changes, muscle pain, muscle weakness, vision changes or skin ailments including redness, swelling, peeling or blistering. Other serious side effects listed by eMedTV.com include severe constipation, worsening of glaucoma, blurred vision, hardened stools, back pain or drowsiness.

Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction to Sanctura XR is possible and it can be deadly, warns Drugs.com. Symptoms of such a reaction may include rash, hives, itching of the skin, trouble breathing, chest tightening, facial swelling, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the lips and/or swelling of the tongue.
