The 3-day tuna diet is a very restrictive short-term diet that allows only about 1,200 calories per day. This fad diets around and often goes by various names such as the Mayo Clinic Diet, Cleveland Clinic Diet or American Heart Association Diet. However, the 3-day tuna diet was not developed at any of these institutions and none of them endorse it.
Description
Promoters of the 3-day tuna diet say you can lose up to 10 lb. in just three days. The extremely low-calorie plan means you might lose a little fat, but weight loss will probably come primarily from water since the diet includes very few carbohydrates, which help the body retain fluids. As soon as you go off of the diet, this weight will come right back. There is no evidence to support claims the diet lowers cholesterol or cleanses the body. You are supposed to adhere strictly to the diet regimen and to drink at least 32 oz. of water each day. Variations of the 3-day tuna diet do allow some substitutions such as toast for saltines, frozen yogurt for vanilla ice cream and cottage cheese for tuna.
Breakfast
You start the 3-day diet with a breakfast of 5 saltine crackers, 1 oz. of cheddar cheese and an apple. Breakfast for the second day consists of half a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice plus a slice of toast and 1 tbsp. of peanut butter. On the final day, breakfast is 1 egg, 1 slice of toast and half a banana. You may have a cup of black coffee or tea with a low-calorie sweetener.
Lunch
Lunch on the first day is 1 boiled egg and a piece of toast. For the second day, your midday meal consists of 1/2 cup of tuna and another slice of toast. The lunch for day three is 8 saltine crackers plus 1 cup of tuna or cottage cheese. Again, you can have black coffee or tea with sweetener.
Dinner
Your dinner on the first day includes 1 cup each of tuna, cauliflower, carrots and any kind of melon. For dessert you should eat 1/2 cup of regular vanilla ice cream. Dinner on the second day consists of 3 oz. of any lean meat or chicken, an apple and 1 cup each of green beans and carrots. Dessert is 1 cup of vanilla ice cream. On the last day your final meal of the diet starts with 2 beef frankfurters and 1/2 banana. You also eat 1/2 cup of carrots and 1 cup of broccoli or cabbage. Top things off with 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream.
