While trampolines can be a fun way to exercise and work your muscles, they are also inherently unsafe. Bouncing too high, landing poorly, falling off the trampoline, and attempting stunts are just a few of the causes of trampoline-related injuries. These injuries can range from minor strains and sprains to paralysis and even death. Accidents can happen even with good parental supervision, but there are some precautions you can take to make trampoline use a safer experience.
Basic Precautions
While some safety measures may seem like common sense, trampoline injuries frequently occur due to poor planning and bad assembly. Never set up the trampoline on a hard surface such as concrete; instead, pick a soft, level, grassy location away from trees and other structures. Cover the trampoline's springs with padding to reduce risk of injury in case of a fall. If possible, install an enclosure around the trampoline to prevent people from falling off the edge.
Set Restrictions
Trampolines are best suited for children ages 6 and up who have good control of their bodies. If the child is under age 6 or if his motor skills are not very well developed, do not allow the child to use the trampoline. Additionally, limit trampoline use to one person at a time; injuries are more likely to occur when multiple people are bouncing simultaneously.
Avoid Stunts
It can be fun to watch somebody do a flip or other stunt on a trampoline, but attempting stunts is more likely to cause injury. If you or your child wants to learn to do flips on a trampoline, enroll in a gymnastics class to learn proper technique using safety gear and a spotter. Under no circumstances should you try stunts on a home trampoline.
Adult Supervision
Adult supervision is an important element in preventing trampoline injury; it gives the opportunity for the adult to stop any dangerous behavior before an injury occurs. Always supervise younger children when they are bouncing on a trampoline; if possible, supervise older children and teenagers as well. And while accidents can happen even with careful adult supervision, an adult can ensure that any injuries receive immediate medical attention.
