While it's one of the most basic tricks on a skateboard, grinding can be intimidating and troublesome to tackle. The move involves sliding across a smooth, even surface, such as a railing or the corner of a curb. Since the skateboard wheels do not actually touch the surface, the move requires significant forward momentum and close attention to balance for it to be successful. Always wear a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads when your perform skateboard tricks.
Step 1
Set up a grinding rail or find a low, flat platform to grind on. It's best to start at low heights and gradually work your way up to taller items as you feel more comfortable with the movements.
Step 2
Skate up to the rail at a slight angle. The skateboard should be nearly parallel to the rail when you land on it as you need the forward momentum to successfully grind.
Step 3
Ollie onto the rail and land so the middle of both trucks hit the edge. With a proper landing, you should continue to slide forward on the rail. The distance you grind depends mostly on the speed at which you skate up to the rail.
Step 4
Apply pressure to the back of the board as you get near the end of the rail. If you do not apply pressure to the back, the nose will hit the ground first and may cause you to crash.
Step 5
Land flat on the ground and skate away.
Tips and Warnings
- Check the trucks to ensure they aren't worn down. If the bolt sticks out past the body of the trucks, it can damage the bolt, which may require you to replace the trucks.
