Most pregnant women who are planning to breastfeed put nursing bras high on their list of must-have post-pregnancy items. But many women still aren't sure how a nursing bra differs from a regular bra in look, feel and functionality. A good nursing bra provides support and comfort while allowing some leeway for your breasts to change over the course of breastfeeding.

Description

Nursing bras are soft-cup bras with no underwire. Underwires can block milk ducts, which extend down to the ribcage and back under the armpits, so nursing bras provide support in other ways. The cups of a nursing bra open to allow access to the nipple without removing the entire bra. In most nursing bras, the latch is at the top of the triangle that makes up the cup, near the shoulder strap. Some manufacturers also make specialty nursing bras with a center latch or sports style bras designed for active women.

Sizing

You might need a few different sizes of nursing bras over the course of your breastfeeding experience. Purchase a few toward the end of your pregnancy in a size slightly larger than your size at that time. Your breasts are likely to become engorged during the first weeks post-pregnancy as your milk supply becomes established. Once your milk supply has settled into its [long-term pattern, after about the second week postpartum, you can purchase additional nursing bras in the size you will continue to wear until weaning.

How to Use

To open a nursing bra, simply unhook the top latch on the side you want to nurse on and fold down the cup. You should try to get nursing bras that you can unlatch with one hand since your other hand will be holding your baby. You can place small cotton nursing pads in the cup of the bra to catch any leaking milk between feedings. As your breasts change over time, you can adjust the bra straps and back latch position for better fit.

Considerations

A nursing bra is not a necessity for all women, so if you don't want to wear one, you don't have to. Some women use a stretchy regular bra throughout the entire time they breastfeed, while others go braless. Comfort is key, so try on a few nursing bras before choosing one and only buy a few until you have worn them for a while and feel comfortable with the fit.
