1. Boost Your Bosom With Salt Water
Saline breast implants have been boosting bosoms since 1962. The implants are composed of a plastic lining that is filled with a sterile saline (salt) water solution. From 1992 to 2006, saline implants were the only type of implant available to women. Saline breast implants help enlarge breasts, making them fuller. Women who opt for saline implants are often looking to balance their body or correct breasts that are asymmetrical.
2. Considered Safer Than Silicone Implants
For nearly 15 years, the FDA banned silicone implants in the United States and only recently cleared them again. Saline breast implants are the safer route in breast augmentation surgery. If a saline implant ruptures, the breast goes flat and the body absorbs the saline solution inside the implant. A silicone implant rupture is much harder to detect and the body cannot absorb the silicone gel inside the implant. Many women report severe health problems following a silicone implant rupture.
3. Saline Breast Implants Still Present Risks
Saline breast implants still pose risks for patients. They may shift following surgery, causing a lopsided breast, which may require more surgery. As they age, silicone implants are more prone to rupture. Hard impact, such as a car accident, can also cause a saline breast implant to rupture.
4. New Breasts Aren't Cheap
The average cost for breast augmentation surgery is several thousand dollars. Keep in mind that saline implants have a life span of about 10 to 15 years. After that, removal or an upgrade is required. Insurance does not cover most plastic surgery. The exception for saline breast implants is if a woman has undergone a mastectomy. Then insurance must cover breast augmentation, which qualifies as reconstructive surgery. If a woman has an accident in which her natural breasts receive damage, she may also quality for reconstructive breast surgery.
5. Find a Breast Augmentation Specialist
You should feel comfortable discussing your reasons for wanting breast augmentation and asking any questions of your plastic surgeon during your consultation. Your plastic surgeon should be able to tell you the benefits and risks of breast augmentation surgery and offer his opinion on saline breast implants versus silicone implants. Consult a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
