Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder -- or ADHD -- is a neurobiological condition generally diagnosed in childhood and characterized by symptoms like inattention, impulsive behavior, poor concentration and physical hyperactivity. Because the disorder generally negatively affects children's school performance, friendships, family interactions and mood, parents of children with ADHD are often desperate for effective treatments, including nutritional or alternative-medicine remedies. Fish oil such as cod liver oil is sometimes used to treat ADHD. Talk to your doctor before supplementing with cod liver oil.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fatty fish -- and their oils -- are rich sources of a type of healthy fat known as omega-3 fatty acids, or essential fatty acids. According to the Mayo Clinic website, omega-3 fatty acids are very beneficial to your health, helping to lower cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce your blood pressure and protect your heart from disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are also integral to brain health and normal behavioral development, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Fish Oil and ADHD

Because of this known link between omega-3 fatty acids and brain and nervous system development, various practitioners have begun recommending omega-3 supplementation for the treatment of ADHD, according to "The New York Times." Fish oil in particular seems effective for at least some patients in calming and normalizing the problematic behaviors associated with the disorder, although more research is needed.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil is an especially rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. According to the Tufts University School of Medicine, cod liver oil contains 2.8 g of omega-3 fatty acids per 1 Tbsp. dose. However, appropriate pediatric doses of cod liver oil or other fish oils for the treatment of ADHD have not been universally established. In addition, some children with ADHD, particularly those with milder symptoms, may benefit more from cod liver oil than others, according to "The New York Times."

Caveats and Precautions

Cod liver oil for the treatment of ADHD is somewhat controversial, and not all medical experts believe that fish oil supplementation is effective. In addition, ADHD experts generally favor a multipronged approach to treatment that includes interventions such as behavioral therapy and medication, according to "The New York Times." If you are concerned that you or your child may have ADHD, seek professional evaluation by a clinical psychologist or neuropsychologist for assessment and a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. Always consult your physician for medical approval before taking or giving your child cod liver oil or any other supplement; some individuals may experience negative side effects.
