As a parent, you are aware of even the simplest change on your baby's skin. These changes can indicate a variety of issues, including allergic reactions. Hives are raised, red and sometimes itchy patches or welts on the skin. This condition, also known as urticaria, is caused by the body's release of histamine, which is a chemical produced by the body during an allergic reaction. People of all ages are susceptible to developing hives, including babies. Recognizing the symptoms of hives is recommended, especially for parents and caregivers.
Rash
When a baby's body breaks out in hives, there will be at least one area on his body that has a rash on it. This rash will be red, raised and could even be in the form of welts. The rash will resemble a diaper rash, yet will be on different parts of the body besides the diaper area.
Itching
Another symptom of hives is the constant itching associated with the rash. Although babies cannot scratch the itch themselves, they will try to touch the area with their hands. If the rash is on her ears, you may see your baby pulling at them. If the rash is on her hands, you may see her putting her hands to her mouth often in an attempt to relieve the itchy feeling.
An excellent way to help relieve the itchy feeling is to bathe your baby in an oatmeal bath. You can use either products made with oatmeal or you can pour a cup of oatmeal into the bath water. Antihistimine medication can also help ease the itching, but consult your physician before administering it to your baby.
Mood Changes
A child suffering from hives will often be cranky, especially if the outbreak is severe. The constant itching and irritated feeling that accompanies the rash will cause your baby to be unsettled and easily irritated. This is normal since a baby cannot verbally express her feelings. Watch for signs of crying, frustration and general changes in her mood. Try to spend extra time comforting your baby and soothing her through lullabies, warm compresses and tender hugs and kisses.
What To Do If Your Child Has An Outbreak of Hives
The first thing you should do if you believe your baby is having an outbreak of hives is to consult with your physician. Hives occur due to an allergic reaction. Monitor your baby for more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing and turning blue. If the symptoms become severe, get immediate medical attention by calling 911 or taking your baby to your local emergency room. Always follow up with your baby's physician in order to help determine what caused the outbreak of hives and how to prevent this from occurring again.
