Ingredients of Premesis Rx Prenatal Vitamins

Premesis Rx is a prescription prenatal multivitamin that is used to help reduce nausea during pregnancy as part of a prescribed regimen by a physician. Premesis Rx contains high amounts of calcium and the B vitamins pyridoxine, cyanocobalamin and folic acid. The recommended dosage for Premesis Rx is one tablet taken daily; this tablet should be taken with a meal. As with any health supplement, only take Premesis Rx prenatal vitamins under a doctor's supervision.

Calcium

Premesis Rx contains 200 mg of calcium. According to the "Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics," a pregnant woman requires 50 and 330 mg of calcium per day to support the development of the fetal skeleton. Women in western countries may not receive sufficient quantities of calcium through their regular diet. Therefore, many doctors recommend the supplementation of calcium during pregnancy. Supplementation becomes particularly important during the second and third trimesters, to further support the development of the skeleton and to support lactation in pregnant women.

Folic Acid (B-9)

The book "Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies" says that accepted medical protocol dictates the consumption of 4 mg of folic acid per day for women with a prior child affected by a neural tube defect. Folate serves an important function during embryonic and fetal development -- the fetus requires folate to support adequate cell division, which translates into tissue and system formation.

Cyanocobalamin (B-12)

"Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies" indicates that the developing fetus also requires vitamin B-12 to support neurological development. Inadequate levels of B-12 in the fetus can result in a reduction of motor skills, and the supplementation of B-12 helps to prevent fetal deficiencies of this vitamin. This is especially important for vegan and vegetarian women, who may not receive sufficient amounts of B-12 through their diet. The fetus also requires vitamin B-12 for DNA synthesis.

Pyridoxine (B-6)

According to the "Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics," the recommended dietary allowance for pyridoxine, or vitamin B-6, increases by approximately 33 percent during pregnancy. Failure to consume sufficient amounts of vitamin B-6 can result in nausea and vomiting during pregnancy as a response to the deficiency. The vitamin B-6 found in Premesis Rx prenatal vitamins supports reduced nausea and vomiting during pregnancy and provides pregnant women with sufficient B-6 to make up for the increased dietary requirements during pregnancy.
