The onset of muscle fatigue and spasms while walking stem from a variety of possible causes. Muscle spasms are involuntary muscular contractions and muscle fatigue is the inability of a muscle to perform work. Factors that contribute to the cause of these conditions include fitness level, hydration and nutrition. In some cases muscular spasms and fatigue are symptoms of a serious medical condition in which case you need to seek advice from your licensed health care practitioner. In most other cases, muscle fatigue and spasms are attributed to overexertion, dehydration and improper fuel intake.
Overexertion
Muscle spasms and fatigue are two symptoms of overexertion which takes place when muscles are worked beyond their normal capacity. Overexertion affects elite athletes as well as less conditioned individuals. Novice exercisers who are de-conditioned and unaware of warning signs, are particularly susceptible. To prevent muscle fatigue and spasms when walking, increase your distance and pace gradually. Prevent exposure to extreme heat by planning your walks around the coolest times of the day such as early morning or dusk.
Inadequate Nutritional Intake
Just like a car needs gas to run, your body needs fuel to function properly. Your body relies primarily on glucose for fuel. Glucose comes from carbohydrates in food. Glycogen is the storage form of glucose. As your body demands more energy, glycogen is broken down into glucose to be used by your muscle cells. Inadequate fuel intake leads to the inability of muscle cells to function properly resulting in muscle fatigue and spasms.
Dehydration
Dehydration occurs when you take in less water than what is being lost. Breathing, sweating and urinating all excrete water from your body. Excessive perspiration is especially dangerous if you do not take in adequate amounts of fluid to balance your loss. Spasms and fatigue take place when you do not have enough water to support proper muscle functions. Dehydration also contributes to electrolyte imbalances which further exacerbate spasms and fatigue.
Medical Complications
Muscle spasms and fatigue can also serve as warning signs for serious medical complications such as neurological conditions, autoimmune diseases and heart disease. If you experience chronic muscle fatigue or spasms, it is important to seek a medical examination by a licensed practitioner.
