When your baby is in pain, you would do anything to relieve his anguish. Teething is a painful and difficult stage for many infants, resulting in general irritability, refusal to eat or even lack of sleep. While you can't make teething painless, you can reduce the discomfort and help your child get to sleep.

Teething Rings

Teething rings work by massaging and even cooling an infant's gums. They may provide short-term relief for your child's teething pain, and since they are not medicated, they are the most natural way to soothe her and get her to sleep. They are available in a variety of shapes and textures, and some can be chilled to help reduce inflammation. If your child doesn't like a particular teething ring, another kind might work, so don't give up. Some infants will never use a teething ring, preferring instead to gnaw on their own fingers. This is also normal.

Medication

A variety of medications are made just to soothe sore gums, and because they are formulated to work for up to four hours, they may provide enough relief that your baby can sleep for short periods. Purchase an over-the-counter cream or gel that you can rub directly on his gums, or select a pain reliever for infants such as acetaminophen. You can also purchase natural remedies for teething, if you prefer to use holistic remedies. Always consult your pediatrician before you give your child any medication, and follow the directions and dosing instructions carefully. Even teething gels can be harmful if you apply too much or use them too frequently.

Remedies to Avoid

You may have heard that rubbing rum or another kind of alcohol can ease your baby's teething pain. Alcohol will probably help her sleep, but this is very dangerous. There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe for an infant, and you may make her very ill. Do not use any herbs or homemade remedies without consulting a physician who is skilled in natural remedies. Remember that herbs can be powerful medications, and they deserve the same respect as other medicines. You may give her an accidental overdose or use a remedy that is dangerous for her.

When to Consult a Pediatrician

If your child is in a lot of pain or if his gums appear unusual, such as being very swollen or blue, or if his gums are bleeding or oozing pus or another liquid, consult a physician. Your child's symptoms may be normal or nothing to worry about, but if he has developed an abscess, he may require an antibiotic. Do not hesitate to consult your physician or dentist if you notice anything unusual. It is better to get reassurance that his condition is normal than to let him suffer or not receive treatment when he needs it.
