Flaky scalp can be caused by seborrhoeic eczema, psoriasis and certain fungal infections. This can present as white scaly patches that may or may not itch and an increase in white flakes when you brush your hair. Maintaining a clean and moisturized scalp can help alleviate the symptoms of a flaky scalp. Olive oil is an effective conditioning treatment that can be applied directly to the scalp and help to reduce flaking.
Minimally Processed Olive Oil
There are many types and brands of olive oil. Choices include extra virgin, virgin, pure and olive pomace oil. While the type of oil is not important when used as a scalp treatment the product should be as natural as possible and minimally processed. The oil will be in direct contact with the pores of your scalp and is absorbed into your skin -- the use of a natural product will ensure that you are administering only olive oil and not other additives that can worsen your scalp condition.
Clean the Scalp
A healthy scalp starts with a proper cleaning regimen. If you do suffer from a flaky scalp it is essential to use as pure and natural products as you can in order to keep the pores open and uncontaminated. A buildup of hair products can clog the pores of your scalp leading to an increase in scalp flakiness.
Massage the Oil Into Your Scalp
Wash and towel dry your hair. Dip your fingers into olive oil that is at room temperature and massage vigorously into your scalp. You do not need to coat the hair shafts as this treatment is primarily for your scalp. Wrap a towel around your head and leave this treatment on for at least an hour. Rinse with lukewarm water and shampoo. Alternatively you can leave the olive oil on your scalp over night and rinse and shampoo in the morning.
Benefits of Olive Oil Treatment
Olive oil contains polyphenols which are potent antioxidants that can protect the skin of your scalp from aging. Olive oil is made up of essential fatty acids that add needed moisture to your scalp. Vitamin E is also contained in olive oil. Vitamin E has many benefits for your skin -- it's an antioxidant, it regulates vitamin A, has anti-aging properties, offers sun protection and it's a treatment for psoriasis.
