When healthy, your spleen is a small organ about the size of a fist located on the left side of your abdomen. A spleen becomes enlarged due to several conditions. Although specific foods will not directly shrink a spleen, some of the conditions known to enlarge spleens can be prevented or treated by consuming certain foods, supplements and herbs. If left untreated, an enlarged spleen may need to be removed surgically.

Foods

Viral infections, such as mononucleosis, and certain types of hemolytic anemia can cause an enlarged spleen, according to MayoClinc.com. These conditions can be prevented or improved by eating certain foods. Antioxidant-rich foods strengthen the immune system, which is the body's second line of defense against invading bacteria and viruses. Skin and the mucus that protects openings of the body, such as the mouth and nose, are the body's first line of defense. Antioxidants may also improve symptoms of mono, which is a virus typically passed through kissing, giving it the nickname of the "kissing disease." Hemolytic anemia is disorder in which red blood cells are destroyed more quickly than the body's bone marrow can make new ones. Dietary changes and vitamin and mineral supplements are some of the treatment options for hemolytic anemia.

Juice and Tea

Certain liquids and herbs may also strengthen the immune system and improve mono symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Green tea and echinacea supplements may strengthen the immune system so it can better fight off invaders that cause problems affecting the spleen. Cranberry juice or cranberry capsules and the herb astragalus may have antiviral properties to protect the body and spleen from viral infections. Herbs sometimes interact with other herbs and medications, so you should always consult a doctor before taking herbal supplements.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Probiotics

Omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics may also be beneficial for treating mono and improving immune system function to indirectly help the spleen stay healthy. Fish oil is a common source of omega-3s, which improve immunity. Vegetarian and vegan sources of omega-3s include flax seeds and flax oil, English and black walnuts, and soybean, canola and walnut oils. Probiotics are live, "friendly" bacteria. Probiotic supplements improve gastrointestinal and immune health, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Food sources of probiotics include yogurt and some wellness bars, cereals and soy yogurts. Manufactures label foods containing probiotics.

Other Ways to Shrink Your Spleen

Radiation therapy is another option for shrinking an enlarged spleen. If an enlarged spleen does not shrink because of dietary changes or radiation, surgery is required. People can live active lives without a spleen, but it puts them at a greater risk for developing infections.
