Kwashiorkor, also known as protein-calorie malnutrition, is a condition that manifests in regions where famine has occurred and food supply is limited. According to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, kwashiorkor is a common type of malnutrition affecting children in the tropics. Diet and nutrition are an important part of any kwashiorkor treatment plan. Before using diet and nutrition to help treat this serious health problem, ask a physician about the risks, benefits and limitations of this therapeutic approach.
About Kwashiorkor
Kwashiorkor is rare among children in the United States, notes the National Center for Biotechnology Information, although when it does occur, it may be indicative of neglect or child abuse. Children throughout the world are most susceptible to this heath problem, due to their increased nutrition needs. Without sufficient protein and calories, children may experience stunted growth, generalized swelling, abdominal swelling, skin and hair discoloration, lethargy and irritability. Kwashiorkor may also lead to reduced red blood cell count, decreased muscle mass, shock, coma and even death in severe cases.
Therapeutic Diet
A therapeutic diet for treating this condition involves the gradual reintroduction of protein and calories into a child's diet. The Merck Manuals website states that milk-based formulas -- given 6 to 12 times per day -- are the first dietary treatment for kwashiorkor, but should be limited to 100 mL or less per feeding. Milk-based formulas and dietary supplements are usually given during the initial week of treatment. By the fourth week of treatment, children with kwashiorkor may benefit from consuming whole milk, cod liver oil, eggs, fruit, meat and yeast. Proper rehydration in the early phases of treatment is essential.
A Helpful Food
Cod liver oil may be one of the most helpful foods for treating kwashiorkor. Cod liver oil contains significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and D. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that cod liver oil may be helpful for keeping the bones, skin, eyes and immune system healthy. Cod liver oil should be kept in a closed bottle or container and out of direct sunlight at room temperature. Cod liver oil should not be used during the initial phase of kwashiorkor treatment.
Additional Information
Kwashiorkor is a serious health problem that always requires the attention and intervention of a medical professional. Dietary intervention is an essential treatment measure for this condition, although other therapies may also be required to help resolve kwashiorkor. A healthcare professional who specializes in clinical nutrition can provide counsel on the most effective ways to use diet and nutrition for treating this health problem.
