Underhand layup is a basketball shooting technique. Layups are shots taken from under or to the side of the basket and aimed to bank off the backboard. Low-post basketball shooting techniques include several layup techniques, such as overhand layup, reverse layup, power layup as well as underhand layup. Experts recommend the underhand layup as the first technique players should learn. Young players who are not strong enough can practice with push release before working on the underhand layup.
Step 1
Approach the basket dribbling from the right side if you are right-handed. Reverse the directions for all steps if you are left-handed.
Step 2
Take a half stride with your right foot when you get within shooting distance. Take a full stride with your left foot, plant it on the court and push off with it. Place your right hand under and behind the ball while your left hand holds and controls the ball.
Step 3
Bring up your right hand, arm and knee at the same time as you rise into the air. Keep your left hand on the ball to protect it.
Step 4
Jump directly toward the hoop. Keep your eyes on the backboard instead of the ball, and aim for top corner of the backboard.
Step 5
Release the ball with a gentle flick of your right wrist, fingers and elbow at or close to the peak of your jump. Do not release the ball if you are already coming down. Flick the ball so it hits softly off the backboard into the net.
