You'd have a hard time finding an exercise that consumes more calories per second than running because there really isn't any. In theory, if people could run for an hour straight, that would be the most effective way of losing weight. The only problem is there are very few athletes who are capable of this feat, much less anyone else. Running is certainly a great way of burning off large amounts of calories over the short term, but its hard to sustain over a long period. Fortunately, there are a number of activities that are just as effective and, in some cases, more productive than hitting the track.

Tae Kwan Do

Running for 60 minutes without interruption might sound like mission impossible to some, but what about sparring in the gym for the same period? A 200-pound tae kwan do fighter burns 900 calories every hour while in the gym. Considering the fact that tae kwan do, unlike running, uses all of the body's major muscles, the fighter also is able to gain more muscle mass, which in turn boosts the number of calories that he burns during the day.

Tennis

Tennis legends such as Andre Agassi were admired as much for their bodies as their sporting records. That's because a game of tennis is a great way to burn calories and get your body in shape. Most people would find it easier to play a game of tennis for an hour with their friends than go for a run for 15 minutes. And, within this hour, they'll be able to burn off more than 700 calories while having fun.

In-line Skating

The next time someone offers you in-line skates, don't flinch. In-line skating is an effective way of burning fat. A person weighing 200 pounds can burn as much as 1,000 calories from skating for an hour. This is close to the amount that the individual would burn from running a distance of eight miles within the same period (1,200 calories).

Swimming

Swim when you can. Unlike running, which uses your leg muscles, swimming requires the use of all the major muscles in your body. Swimming also is gentler on the joints than running. You'll be able to burn as much as 700 calories while swimming laps for a 60-minute period. You also will enjoy the soothing feel of water on your skin.
