Mangos are tropical fruits that can be found in grocery stores and markets year-round. They have a sweet flavor that is often enjoyed alone or included in recipes for items such as smoothies or salsa. The flesh of mangos is very slippery, which can make them difficult to peel and cut if you do not use the proper technique. Leaving the peel on while cutting makes handling the fruit much easier.

Slice and Scoop

Step 1

Place the mango on the cutting board stem-end down and steady with your left hand. Hold a knife in your right hand.

Step 2

Place the knife approximately 1/4 inch away from the middle of the mango. Slice straight down through the skin and fruit, cutting off an oval slice of mango.

Step 3

Flip the mango around until the uncut side is near your knife and repeat the same cutting method. You will be left with two oval slices of mango referred to as cheeks and the inner slice consisting mainly of the seed.

Step 4

Cut parallel slices into the flesh of both mango cheeks, being careful not to cut through the skin of the fruits.

Step 5

Scoop the mango slices out of the skin using a large spoon. Eat the slices raw, add them to salads or salsa or blend them in a smoothie.

Cubing

Step 1

Stand the mango on a cutting board, stem-end down. Stead the fruit with your left hand while grasping a large knife in your right.

Step 2

Place the knife approximately 1/4 inch away from the middle of the mango. Cut straight down through the fruit, cutting away a large oval slice.

Step 3

Flip the mango and repeat the same steps on the opposite side. You will be left with two large oval slices of mango and the inedible inner seed.

Step 4

Cut slices into the mango flesh using a small knife, being careful not to slice through the skin of the fruit. Rotate the mango until the slices you just made are running horizontally across the flesh. Cut vertical slices into the flesh in the same manner, creating small cubes.

Step 5

Flip the mango cheeks inside out, pushing the cubes away from the flesh. Slice along the base of the cubes with a small knife, releasing the cubes from the skin. Eat the cubes raw or add to a favorite recipe.

Mango Splitter

Step 1

Place the mango splitter onto the cutting board stem-end down and hold with one hand.

Step 2

Place the mango splitter over the top of the fruit, with the opening in the splitter centered over the widest part of the mango.

Step 3

Place one hand on either handle of the mango splitter and press down firmly, moving the splitter down through the fruit. This will separate the edible mango from the inner seed portion.

Step 4

Use one of the two methods listed above to remove the flesh from the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Left-handed individuals should simply reverse the hands used to steady and cut the fruit.
