Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, is a form of the fungal infection ringworm. The fungus thrives in moist dark places, such as between your toes, and in severe cases can infect the nail bed. Getting rid of athlete's foot between your toes is fairly simple using over-the-counter topical medications. Once the fungus infects the nail bed, however, you may require more aggressive treatments because the nail prevents topical medications from getting to the fungus.
Step 1
Consult your physician if you have a nail fungus. Your doctor may prescribe an antifungal nail polish or an oral medication to treat the nail fungus. Use the medication per your doctor's directions.
Step 2
For athlete's feet, wash your feet regularly with warm soap and water. Pay close attention to the infected areas.
Step 3
Dry your feet thoroughly before you put on your shoes and socks. Residual moisture will encourage the fungus to grow.
Step 4
Apply a topical athlete's foot medication to the infected areas between your toes or other parts of your foot, excluding the nails. The topical medication will help clear up the skin infection and relieve the itching and burning.
Step 5
Wear clean, dry socks. If your feet sweat a lot, carry extra pairs with you and change your socks often.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult your physician if the foot or nail fungus worsens, recurs or does not respond to treatment. In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe surgery to remove the infected nail and expose the nail bed.
