How to Do the Alphabet Exercise After Ankle Surgery

The alphabet exercise is a range-of-motion exercise that helps keep the ankle supple and encourages blood flow through the joint. Your doctor or physical therapist might prescribe this exercise as part of your recover plan after ankle surgery. You can also perform this exercise while recovering from an injury or as a preventative measure, to maintain mobility in your ankle. If you have had recent ankle surgery, consult your physician or physical therapist before performing these exercises.

Step 1

Sit somewhere that you can stretch your legs straight, such as the floor, a couch or a chair with an ottoman.

Step 2

Draw the letters of the alphabet with the foot on your affected ankle. Do not move the rest of your leg; just move your foot.

Step 3

"Write" the letters in all capitals and make them as large as possible. The larger you make the letters, the wider the range of motion in your ankle.

Step 4

Perform five repetitions and do the exercise three times per day, or as directed by your doctor or physical therapist.

Tips and Warnings

  • For added variation, do the letters in both print and cursive.
