Most doctors will agree that there are a multitude of rosacea triggers; however, most believe that each patient only has a few specific triggers. If you suffer from rosacea, you will most likely disagree, as those with moderate to severe rosacea claim to have from 20 or even up to 50 different triggers that they try to avoid each and every day. While rosacea triggers will vary from person to person, there are a few common categories which tend to affect the majority of patients. The best way to decipher your own triggers is to keep a diary, taking not of everything you were doing before every flare-up. Over time, you should learn to recognize obvious triggers.

Heat is one of the most common causes of rosacea flare-ups, and unfortunately, it comes in a variety of forms. Exposure to the sun, physical exercise, hot foods, hot baths, heated drinks, excessive indoor temperature and emotional stress that causes a rise in body temperature can all trigger your rosacea. Deciding how to avoid rosacea triggers that involve heat can be the most difficult; however, controlling the temperature of your baths, drinks, foods and home, as well as wearing wide-brimmed hats while out in the sun, may help.
3. Cold Can Be Just as Bad as Heat
The attempt to manage rosacea symptoms can be extremely frustrating, and the case of temperature is the perfect example. While hot temperatures can aggravate symptoms, so can cold. Allowing your skin to be exposed to the wind or going out in cold weather may cause your symptoms to flare. It can be difficult to find a happy medium; however, when confronted with cold weather, it is best to wear layered clothing so that you can add or remove clothing as needed to regulate your body temperature.
4. Your Favorite Foods May Cause Your Flushing
Alcohol and spicy foods are near the top of the list of foods that trigger rosacea; however, certain fruits, marinated meats, some vegetables and dairy products also make the list. When it comes to food triggers, it is best to take clear notes in your journal to eliminate those which cause you problems. Food triggers will vary from person to person and will generally only include a few food items, all of which can be easily eliminated from your diet.
5. Health and Beauty Products May Be Culprits
Prescription and herbal medications as well as cosmetics, lotions, creams and other beauty supplies might be causing your rosacea symptoms. While beauty supplies can easily be traded for new products, medications are a bit more difficult. If you believe your medications or supplements are triggering your symptoms, speak to your doctor about possible alternatives.
