Citrus juices and soy sauce are two ingredients that work well together and often are paired to enhance a dish. Whether you use lemon, lime, orange or even grapefruit, the flavors create a salty, sweet, sour balance when combined correctly with soy sauce. The combination of citrus and soy sauce may be used in a variety of dishes spanning multiple cuisines.

Step 1

Add ½ cup of soy sauce to a pot and heat it under a medium flame until it just reaches the boiling point. Take it off the heat and stir in 1/3 cup of lemon juice and 2 tbsp. of rice vinegar or red wine vinegar. Use the mixture as a dipping sauce for seafood or vegetable tempura.

Step 2

Combine 2½ cups of freshly squeezed orange juice, 3 tbsp. lemon juice and 2 tbsp. lime juice with ¾ cup of soy sauce in a sauce pot. Add 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar and ½ cup of minced ginger. Turn the heat to medium and simmer for 15 minutes. Pass the sauce through a sieve and serve it over tuna or other fish.

Step 3

Add ¾ cup of soy sauce into a glass jar. Squeeze in 5 tbsp. of lemon juice and 3 tbsp. of orange juice. Secure a lid on the top and shake the ingredients together vigorously. Place the jar in the fridge and serve it with sushi, cooked fish or as a light dressing for a salad.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use low-sodium soy sauce if you must restrict the amount of sodium you take in. Experiment with different types of soy sauce and substituting different citrus juices to create new flavor variations.
