Lovaza, a prescription supplement made from fish oil, treats patients with high triglyceride levels. Excess triglycerides, fats in the blood, may contribute to heart disease. The FDA approved Lovaza to lower triglycerides. Also known by its generic name, omega-3-acid ethyl esters, Lovaza contains omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish that may provide heart health. Over-the-counter fish oil supplements contain omega-3s, but see your doctor about using dietary supplements or prescribed medication for heart conditions.

Omega-3 Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids may combat heart disease by improving cholesterol levels, lowering triglycerides and reducing high blood pressure, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. All types of fish contain omega-3s, but species with the highest amounts include tuna, salmon, sardines, herring, halibut, trout, cod and oysters. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week, especially fish rich in omega-3s. The fatty acids play important roles in brain function, growth and development. Your body does not make omega-3s, so you need to get them through sources such as fish or fish oil supplements. Some seeds and nuts also contain omega-3s.

Lovaza and Triglycerides

The way omega-3s work in the body is not fully understood, but they may decrease the amount of triglycerides and other fats made in the liver, MedlinePlus explains. Lovaza is a medication prescribed by doctors for patients who need to lower their triglyceride levels. Patients use the medication along with a low-fat diet and other lifestyle changes. The liquid-filled gel capsules are usually taken once or twice a day. Like many medications, Lovaza may have side effects. Contact your doctor if you have chest pain, uneven heartbeats, fever, chills or body aches.

Fish Oil Supplements

Manufacturers usually make over-the-counter fish oil supplements from fish with high amounts of omega-3s. You can use the supplements for potential heart health benefits when you don't consume enough fish, but the supplements are not meant for medical treatment. Buy supplements from reputable companies. Fish oil supplements may interact with medications. Consult your doctor about dietary or medical advice if you are taking medication or undergoing treatment.

Heart Healthy Benefits

The use of fish oil in the diet shows promise for heart healthy benefits. Inuit Eskimos from the Arctic and Greenland areas consume diets high in fish with omega-3 fatty acids, and they have healthy triglyceride levels, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. They also have high levels of HDL cholesterol, known as the "good" cholesterol, which clears the bloodstream of excess cholesterol. The Mediterranean diet, which includes fish at least two times a week and discourages meat, has become popular because of its potential to reduce heart disease.
