Anytime you get in the ring, it is wise to know something about your opponent. Boxers have styles and the type of fighter you face will impact your strategy. If your opponent is a relentless puncher who ignores defense, it would be important to use that information as you make your fight plan. Ignoring your opponent's punching style is an invitation to disaster.
Slugger
The slugger is the most powerful puncher in boxing. A slugger hits hard with both hands and is willing to accept two or three punches to get into position to deliver one or two heavy blows that will knock down or knock out his opponent. A slugger is noted for his physical strength and his ability to deliver a powerful punch even though there does not appear to be much of an opening. George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Stanley Ketchel are often considered among the best sluggers of all time.
Swarmer
Swarmers are often considered among the most dangerous fighters in boxing. While they are hard hitters like sluggers, they will relentlessly throw punches without stopping the instant they sense a weakness in their opponent. Defense is not an important factor for sluggers or swarmers. They are interested in delivering a series of heavy blows that overwhelm their opponent and force them into a position of having to cover up and protect themselves. Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier and Rocky Marciano are ranked among the best swarmers in the history of boxing.
Boxer
A boxer is not as aggressive in the ring as a slugger or swarmer. He uses his left jab to set up nearly every move he makes in the ring. He is concerned with defense and will not trade punches with opponents because he wants to avoid getting hit. An effective boxer will use ring movement to get into position to throw punches and avoid those thrown by opponents. Boxers stay on the outside to fight, move in on occasion to throw punches and move back on the outside. Boxers can be efficient punchers but they do not fight recklessly. Muhammad Ali, Benny Leonard and Willie Pep are among the greatest boxers of all time.
Boxing Strategy
Each punching style can be a winning one in the ring. However, fight trainers generally recognize that a boxer has an advantage over a slugger, a slugger has an advantage over a swarmer and a swarmer has an edge on a boxer. The latter category produced some of the most sensational matchups in boxing history when Frazier fought Ali three times in the 1970s. In the first bout, the swarmer Frazier handed Ali his first defeat and knocked him down in the final round of the fight. In the second, Ali won a decision but was hit hard by Frazier's brutal left hook throughout the fight. In the final meeting, Ali ended up stopping Frazier when he battered his face with punches and the swelling closed Frazier's eyes. However, it was Frazier's power punches that nearly stopped Ali in the middle rounds. Ali claimed he was close to dying after absorbing Frazier's left hooks.
