Forget looking fashionable at the gym. Function is a higher priority when deciding what to wear for your workout. The controlled environment inside a gym eliminates the need to change your workout attire to match the weather. Choose exercise gear that provides support and comfort for your chosen physical activity.

Dress Code

Check with your gym to determine if a dress code is in place. The facility may restrict particular types of clothing. For example, the dress code may state that a sports bra alone is not acceptable in the gym. Common dress code points include wearing a shirt that completely covers the back and stomach, no ripped clothing, shorts of a minimum length and clothing without offensive sayings. Footwear is often a part of the dress code. The gym wants specific athletic shoes to avoid damage to their flooring and equipment.

Activities

The activities you plan to do at the gym affect your clothing selection. For example, if you plan to take a class that includes inverted movements, such as yoga, you'll want a tight-fitting top and bottoms that won't fall away from your body during the moves. This prevents an accidental flashing of your classmates. If the gym has a pool, you'll need to wear appropriate swimwear that meets the dress code.

Tops

Plain cotton t-shirts will work for the gym, but cotton stays wet with sweat, making you feel uncomfortable as you exercise. Look for workout shirts that say they are "sweat-wicking," which means they pull the moisture from the sweat away from your body. You won't feel as wet during a long, sweaty workout. Tight-fitting tops are less likely to flap up and show off parts of your body you want to keep covered. Test the shirt you choose to make sure you can move your arms and upper body freely so it doesn't restrict your workout. Sleeveless and short-sleeved shirts are generally used for exercise. Long sleeves are an option, but you may feel overheated with a long, intense workout indoors.

Bottoms

Either shorts or workout pants are acceptable on the bottom at the gym. For women, additional possibilities include workout capri pants or special exercise skirts or skorts. Long pants may cause you to feel hot inside the gym. Stretchy fabrics allow the greatest range of movement as you exercise. Avoid low-waist pants that might slide down as you move.
