How to Jump While Skiing

Once you are experienced with downhill skiing, the next thing you can try is jumping. Mastering the skill of jumping on skis can lead to other fun and impressive freestyle tricks. Jumping can be done on bumps, drop-offs and on ramps. When learning, it is advisable that you practice in designated jumping areas at a ski resort terrain parks.

Step 1

Ski downhill while wearing your helmet, boots and skis.

Step 2

Use your ski poles to push off and increase speed as you approach the ramp.

Step 3

Bend your knees slightly as you glide over the ramp.

Step 4

Maintain your speed as you lift off the ramp.

Step 5

Point your skis upward as you elevate into the air while tucking your body into a squatting position.

Step 6

Keep your knees and legs together and your body stiff as you fly through the air.

Step 7

Level out your skis as you land. Try to absorb the impact of landing by bending at the knees.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice on small ramps until you have mastered jumping. Take lessons from someone with more experience. Never jump alone in case you get injured.
  • Jumping on skis involves an element of risk and might lead to injury.
