Wheat is a versatile crop that produces a plethora of products in both its natural form and as part of processed foods. A kernel of wheat consists of an outer layer called the bran, an inner layer called the endosperm and the germ. Many of the nutrients of wheat are found in the germ, and it is this part that often is processed out of the equation to make many commercial baked goods. Cracked wheat is essentially whole, unprocessed kernels that have been broken up into fine, medium and coarse portions. Cracked wheat works well as a filler for meat and as a cereal. To ensure that your cracked wheat is completely free of any additives, you can crack it at home with a blender just before you want to use it.
Step 1
Portion out your wheat kernels to approximately ¼ cup each.
Step 2
Dump ¼ cup of kernels into your blender and place the lid on top.
Step 3
Press the pulse button on your blender several times to ensure all of the kernels get cracked.
Step 4
Empty the cracked wheat into a container of some sort and add another ¼ cup of kernels to the blender. Repeat the same process until you have cracked all of the wheat kernels.
Tips and Warnings
- Cook cracked wheat the same as rice, adding two cups of liquid for every cup of cracked wheat. Ensure your blender is thoroughly dry before adding the wheat kernels.
