The S-curve is one of the most essential techniques in the sport of snowboarding. Curving allows you to maneuver around any obstacle in the riding terrain, including fellow riders, trees and large boulders. The proper curving technique involves digging the edges of your snowboard into the snow while performing a fluid turn. Curving also enables you to control the speed of the snowboard. ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends keeping your shoulders parallel with the snowboard while linking your curves down the mountain slope.
Step 1
Ride forward with your knees bent until you reach a comfortable speed. Lean back slightly to transfer your body weight onto the heel edge of the snowboard.
Step 2
Apply downward pressure to allow the edge of the board to dig into the snow. Extend your arms for balance as you begin to curve across the snowboarding slope. Maintain the heel side curving stance until you begin to lose momentum.
Step 3
Lean forward quickly to shift your body weight onto the toe edge of the snowboard. Apply downward pressure to dig the edge of your snowboard into the riding terrain. Keep your shoulders parallel with the snowboard as you begin to curve in the opposing direction.
Step 4
Hold the toe side curving stance until you begin to lose momentum. Shift your body weight backwards to perform the heel side curve. Connect your heel side and toe side curves to perform an S-curve down the snowboarding slope.
