1. Drink a Fever Away
Dehydration is the number-one cause of body ache and discomfort during a fever, making fluids one of the most important home remedies for a fever. Drinking plenty of fluids during a fever not only helps to prevent dehydration, it also helps to flush toxins from your body that both cause a fever and are released during a fever. It is recommended that you avoid all solid foods until the fever breaks, as digestion takes needed energy that your body needs to heal. Instead, drink water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices and light soups.
2. Healing Properties of the Tamarind Tree
Tamarind fruit has been used as in natural fever remedies for centuries in the Middle East and India. Tamarind is most commonly available in fruit-paste form, which can be taken in a number of ways. You can eat the the pulp as is, nibbling throughout the day, or you can add the pulp to cold or hot water to make juice or tea. Drink or eat as much tamarind as you like to help reduce a fever and flush toxins; however, be aware that it may have a mild laxative effect.
3. Start Sweating
Sweating can help to reduce body temperature and can be induced by drinking hot sage tea. Sage not only helps to reduce a fever naturally by inducing sweating, it also has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties that can help to eliminate the virus or bacteria that is causing the fever. To make tea, add 1 tsp. of fresh herb to boiling water and steep off heat for 20 minutes. Drink every 2 to 3 hours until the fever breaks.
4. Get the Vinegar
Vinegar is an old and effective folk remedy for reducing a fever when applied as a cold compress to the body. Mix 2 parts of white vinegar with 1 part cold water and then soak clean cloths in the solution. Wring out the excess fluid and place the cloths on the legs, arms, chest or back. Replace the cloths as they collect body heat, resoaking and applying once again until the fever is reduced.
5. Knocking Out a Night Fever
Fever is often worse at night, preventing you from a good night's sleep and weakening your immune system. Garlic can help to draw toxins out of the body and bring a fever down, helping you to sleep through the night. Crush several cloves of garlic and stir with a few tablespoons of olive oil to make a smooth paste. Divide the paste into two parts and place in heaping spoonfuls on a piece of gauze. Place each piece of gauze on the soles of your feet and then wrap them with plastic wrap. Leave them on overnight for a fever-free night's rest.
