How to Marinate a Butterball Turkey

Butterball sells whole turkeys ready for cooking and provides detailed instructions, from thawing to grilling, on how to prepare your holiday turkey. Marinating a butterball turkey is the same as marinating turkey bought elsewhere. A basic marinade is made up of a liquid such as wine or orange juice and some flavorings. Marinating requires steeping the turkey in marinade for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator. You must not marinade butterball turkey for longer than 8 hours to avoid the meat fibers breaking down into mushy-textured meat.

Step 1

Mix the vermouth, orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, garlic, onion and parsley in a jar with tight-fitting lid. Shake well, and pour into a large container.

Step 2

Place the turkey in the marinade, and cover the container.

Step 3

Place the marinated turkey in the refrigerator. Let it sit there overnight.

Tips and Warnings

  • Never reuse and discard any leftover marinade. If the recipe requires marinating the turkey for shorter than 2 hours, make the marinade several hours ahead to allow it to develop its full flavor before the turkey is introduced. The rule of thumb is to use ¼ cup of marinade for every pound of butterball turkey
