Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD has become a common diagnosis, particularly among young children, though adults are also diagnosed. ADHD is a behavioral disorder that affects attention, focus and hyperactivity. The medication Adderall is used to treat ADHD and other disorders such as narcolepsy. This prescription drug is a central nervous stimulant that affects neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers in the brain that contribute to impulse control, hyperactivity and concentration. Caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea and chocolate and is added to carbonated drinks is also a stimulant and may interact with Adderall. Patients who are taking this medication should consult their doctors before consuming caffeine.

ADHD

ADHD has become one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions in children as well as adults. However, it is still a controversial diagnosis and research on this condition is ongoing. The National Health Service in the UK notes that symptoms of ADHD are not yet fully understood but are generally categorized into two types of behavioral problems: inattentiveness and hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Treatment

Adderall is a brand name prescription medication that contains potent stimulant drugs called amphetamines. This medication is a common treatment for ADHD and functions as a central nervous system stimulant. The health site AdultADHD notes that though it is not known exactly how Adderall works to treat this disorder, this medication is thought to increase the flow of the chemicals messengers dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, helping to improve focus and concentration and decrease inattentiveness and hyperactivity.

Caffeine Effects

Caffeine is also a psychoactive stimulant drug, though much less potent than medications such as Adderall. The mental health site PsychCentral notes that is caffeine is thought to boost focus and attention in healthy adults. It may also temporarily improve memory, concentration and stamina. However, caffeine can also cause irritability, anxiety and insomnia and withdrawals may causes symptoms such as headache pain, fatigue and nervousness. Though Drugs.com does not mention caffeine to have adverse interactions with Adderall, it is best to avoid caffeine while on this medication. Consult your doctor before combining these two stimulant drugs.

Adderall Risks

Drugs.com warns that Adderall can cause side effects, adverse interactions and withdrawal symptoms. Side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, loss of appetite and difficulty falling asleep. Individuals with a history of cardiac problems such as hypertension or high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, congenital heart defects or heart disease should not take this medication. As Adderall can be habit-forming, individuals with a history of drug or alcohol abuse should not be given this medication. The site AdultADHD also advises that Adderall should only be used as part of a treatment program that includes support groups, education and counseling for ADHD.
