Depo-Provera is a contraceptive method that contains the hormone progesterone, making it an ideal method for breastfeeding mothers. Many breastfeeding mothers worry about their milk supplies and sometimes consider herbal or alternative remedies to boost them. Fenugreek is an herb that may be useful for boosting your milk supply. Breastfeeding women must be careful to evaluate all substances they use, not only to make sure their milk is safe for their children, but also to make sure these substances do not interact with each other.
Depo-Provera
Depo-Provera, or medroxyprogesterone acetate, is also known as the birth control shot. If you choose this method, you will get a shot every 12 weeks at your health care provider's office. Depo-Provera has several advantages, including privacy and not having to take a pill every day. Side effects of Depo-Provera include light or irregular periods, weight gain and, for some women who are on Depo-Provera for many years, possibly thinning of their bones.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek seed is often used to improve blood sugar for people with diabetes and also to increase a breastfeeding woman's milk supply. The seeds can be ground and taken orally. While some women choose to take fenugreek to increase their milk supply, they should use other methods, such as frequent breastfeeding or pumping, as well. Fenugreek can trigger gastrointestinal disturbances, such as diarrhea and flatulence.
Depo-Provera and Drug Interactions
According to the Depo-Provera prescribing information sheet produced by Pfizer, a variety of medications and alternative treatments can interfere with the efficacy of Depo-Provera, but fenugreek does not. However, if you are using Depo-Provera for contraception, consult your health care provider before using St. John's wort. Additionally, a variety of anti-seizure medications can interfere with Depo-Provera, so use condoms until you can start another birth control method if you start on anti-seizure medications.
Milk Supply
If you are a breastfeeding mother who is using Depo-Provera for contraception and you feel that your milk supply is low, you should employ a variety of strategies to improve your milk supply. While the use of fenugreek is not contraindicated while using Depo-Provera, you should not rely on it exclusively to increase milk production. As much as you can, breastfeed frequently around the clock. Evaluate your own nutrition, hydration and rest, and ensure you are taking care of yourself as well. Seek medical help or advice from your health care provider or lactation consultant.
