Zyprexa is a medication commonly used to treat mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, acute mania or bipolar affective disorders. Otherwise known by its generic name as olanzapine, zyprexa has been on the market since 1996. Since then, this medications has been the center of some controversy around its side effects and the potential for severe weight gain in those taking it. Zyprexa is among one of the newer anti-psychotic medications used to treat the symptoms of persistent mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Belonging to the class of anti-psychotic medications known as atypical antipsychotics, this medication provides some relief from distressing psychological symptoms. Precisely how zyprexa works to address the symptoms of mental illness is unknown, but it is believed that the medication alters or blocks several neurotransmitters in the brain, thus lessening certain chemicals.

Side Effects

Zyprexa, like any medication, is known to have a number of potential side effects, including dizziness, weight gain, sleep disruption, constipation and dry mouth. Side effects are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication and will usually decrease as your body adjusts to the drug. There are many conditions that could affect you safely taking zyprexa that you should discuss with your doctor, such as diabetes, liver disease, glaucoma, heart disease or bowel problems. In rare situations, a serious condition referred to Post-injection Delirium Sedation Syndrome occurs if too much medication makes it into the blood too quickly. Weight Gain and Diabetes

Zyprexa may be responsible for increasing the amount of sugar in your the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. High blood glucose levels are problematic for weight management, and over time could lead to the development of diabetes. According to Drugs.com, most people taking zyprexa can expect to gain approximately 20 lbs., however you may experience much higher gains taking this medication. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the mean weight-gain in a long term study of zyprexa was 12.3 lb. These risks should be reviewed with your doctor.

Weight Management

If weight management is a concern for you, discuss it with your doctor. Do not discontinue zyprexa without discussing first with your physician. Alternative medications known to mitigate weight gain include metformin or modafinil. Alternative dosing options might also be available.
