The 48-Hour Miracle Diet is sometimes known as the Hollywood Miracle Diet or Hollywood Miracle 48-Hour Diet. It's a modified fast; a fad diet that is dangerously low in calories and contains no protein, fat or fiber. It's a liquids-only diet that allows you to drink four 8-oz. glasses of a juice made from water and a variety of fruits with some essential oils added. Always check with your doctor before beginning any diet or detox program, especially one as restrictive as the 48-Hour Miracle Diet, which is not suitable for everyone.

The Hollywood 48-Hour Miracle Diet is basically a 32-oz. bottle of juice made from pineapple, apple, orange, grape, apricot, peach and banana juices and purees with some essential oils added for flavor. This is the only source of calories you're allowed for the two days of your detox weight-loss diet. No other food or drinks are permitted, except water. Every four hours, mix 4 oz. of juice and 4 oz. of purified water and sip the 8 oz. beverage slowly. You can have 4 beverages and additional water per day. The 16 oz. of juice plus 16 oz. of water will total about 400 calories daily. This is a dangerously low calorie intake.

Calories and Metabolism

To maintain your metabolic functions, you need to eat at least 1,200 to 1,500 calories daily says the National Institutes of Health. When you don't eat enough calories, your body thinks you're starving and slows your metabolism down to conserve energy -- a biological survival mechanism that enables people to survive long periods of fasting or times when food is scarce. A lower metabolism makes weight loss more difficult because you're burning fewer calories. Because your body needs energy, it will break down muscle or fat to use as fuel. Using stored fat is ideal, but it's easier for your body to break down muscle tissue; if your low-calorie diet contains adequate amounts of protein, you'll burn fat -- but in the absence of protein, your body will convert muscle tissue for energy. This miracle diet contains no protein.

Hypogylcemia and Immunity

Hunger, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, irritability and dizziness are all signs of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. The 48-Hour Miracle Diet does not contain enough calories to give your brain the glucose it needs. Besides calories, the diet is lacking protein, nutrients and fiber. Expect a diuretic effect from drinking so much, without any type of food. The lack of essential vitamins and minerals also means your body doesn't have the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. Your immune system suffers with the lack of nutrients, leaving you more vulnerable to infection and illness.

Weight Loss

The manufacturer claims you can lose up to 10 lbs. in a weekend, but it won't be real weight loss, which is fat loss. Instead most of the weight you lose will be water and easily regained as soon as you start eating again. This fad diet doesn't teach you anything about healthy eating and can wreak havoc on your blood sugar, electrolyte levels, immune system and metabolism. Although you won't do permanent damage in 48 hours, repeated use of the 48-Hour Miracle Diet could have lasting negative effects.
