Shrimp are marine crustaceans with 10 jointed legs and a thin, smooth exoskeleton that sheds regularly to accommodate the shellfish's growth. Shrimp -- a frequent food choice for many people around the world -- are low in calories, high in protein, and a source of vitamin D and vitamin B12. They can be cooked in various recipes and have become a staple in different cultures. Boiling or steaming shrimp whole is a quick, delicious and low-calorie way to enjoy this delicacy. When the feast is ready, here's how to eat shrimp.

Step 1

Pick up a cooked shrimp. If you're right-handed, hold the tail with your left hand. Grasp the head of the shrimp with your right thumb and index finger.

Step 2

Twist the head and firmly pull it away from the tail. Some people scoop out the contents of the head and eat them, too.

Step 3

Hold the tail firmly with your left thumb and index finger. Slide your right thumb under the first segment of the shell -- the one farthest from the tail -- and peel it back and over. Continue peeling away each segment until you are near the tail.

Step 4

Squeeze the tail with your left thumb and index finger while gently pulling the shrimp out of the tail with your right thumb and index finger.

Step 5

Remove the vein along the top or spine of the shrimp if it has not already been removed.
