Natural remedies for the treatment of various disorders have become more popular. Individuals who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome are also turning to natural remedies and supplements to treat their symptoms. Apple cider vinegar, particularly when made through an organic process, may provide relief from some of the symptoms of the condition.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The typical symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, referred to as IBS, are fluctuating or irregular bowel movements, pain in the abdominal area, intestinal cramps, gas and bloating. Individuals may experience mostly constipation, mostly diarrhea or fluctuation between the two. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, individuals with IBS have intact intestinal structure but seem to be less tolerant to movement of the intestines. IBS may be treated with prescription medications, therapy and supplements.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Especially when made by an organic or natural process, apple cider vinegar provides health benefits. The natural process of fermentation that occurs when apples are aged in a wooden barrel is the process for creating natural apple cider vinegar. This type of apple cider vinegar is brown, not clear like processed vinegars. It has residue floating in it known as "mother," which is made from pectin and apple residue. Apple cider vinegar has numerous natural vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, sodium and potassium, and it can be useful in fighting infections and removing toxins.

Consumption of Apple Cider Vinegar

Due to the high acidity in apple cider vinegar, mixing it with water is preferable to drinking it alone. Combining apple cider vinegar with water and honey or fruit nectar is another way to consume it. The use of apple cider vinegar to pickle fruits or vegetables, to make salad dressing, or in a marinade are additional ways to incorporate it into the diet. Consult a doctor before beginning a regimen of apple cider vinegar.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

There are numerous benefits attributed to apple cider vinegar, but some of its benefits are directly related to the symptoms of IBS. Apple cider vinegar may increase immune system function and improve digestion. It may be useful in treating constipation. Additionally, apple cider vinegar's bacteria-fighting properties may help remove harmful bacteria and toxins in the intestines. While the benefits of apple cider vinegar are described by its users and proponents, there is no clinical research to significantly support its use in treating the symptoms of IBS.
