The truth is that it is unknown if consuming apple cider vinegar internally is safe during pregnancy. Kristi Monson, PharmD, and Arthur Schoenstadt, M.D., caution expectant mothers to avoid drinking raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, but say that cooking with small amounts of pasteurized apple cider vinegar should be fine. Always consult with your obstetrician before taking apple cider vinegar or any other dietary supplements during pregnancy.

Apple Cider Vinegar Uses

Apple cider vinegar is a traditional folk remedy used to treat a range of health conditions from high blood pressure to eczema. It is used as a digestive aid and as a tonic to facilitate weight loss.

Acetic Acid

Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which has the potential to worsen chronic conditions such as heartburn and indigestion commonly experienced during pregnancy. Expectant mothers with nausea or upset stomach may find apple cider vinegar difficult to ingest, even when diluted.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Natural health food advocates prefer using raw, organic apple cider vinegar over the pasteurized varieties. Bragg, the makers of a popular brand of raw apple cider vinegar even state on their site that it is safe to consume during pregnancy. However, unpasteurized liquids should always be consumed with care, as they may contain toxins and bacteria. Always consult with your obstetrician before consuming raw, unpasteurized products.

Pasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar

Pasteurization is a process in which a liquid is heated in order to kill bacteria, toxins and harmful microorganisms in order to make it safe for human consumption. Pasteurized apple cider vinegar retains its acetic acid content, but many of the beneficial bacteria found in the raw product will die during pasteurization. It is safer to consume pasteurized apple cider vinegar, but limit intake if it upsets your stomach.
