Sometimes medical treatments such as chemotherapy, or accidents such as burns, may cause sudden or gradual loss of eyelashes. This loss can be moderate or it can be extreme to the point where you don’t have any eyelashes left at all. This can be embarrassing and even devastating for some people because long, full lashes are considered to be a beauty trait in our society. There are some things you can do to grow back your lashes, however.
Steps to Growing Back Eyelashes
Step 1
Set up an appointment with an eyelash specialist or oculoplastic surgeon in your area. This type of doctor will be able to look at your individual situation and analyze the reason for your eyelash loss, if it is unknown. The specialist will also be able to recommend the best treatment for your individual needs, whether it is an eyelash transplant, a medication or another treatment.
Step 2
Ask your doctor if a prescription medication for eyelash growth is right for you. The FDA has recently approved the use of a serum to grow eyelashes; however, you need to discuss the cost and side effects with your doctor.
Step 3
Give your eyelashes a break from makeup like mascara. Limit mascara use as much as possible while you are trying to grow your lashes back. The process of taking off makeup like mascara can be rough on what eyelashes you have left and may cause more breakage.
Step 4
Use an eyelash conditioner instead of mascara. This will make your natural eyelashes look fuller and dark but will not damage them. There are special eyelash conditioner products available, such as Lashfood, but some people simply use a dot of Vaseline at the ends of their lashes each night. Be sure not to get anything close to or in your eyes.
Step 5
Get eyelash extensions from a salon if you have been doing all of the things your specialist recommended and you are still not seeing any improvement in your eyelash growth. Eyelash extensions will make your lashes look longer, and will fall out naturally in two to three weeks and, if desired, you could get them touched up at that time.
