Tennis quickness drills are designed to improve your speed and agility on the court, making it easier for you to return hits, as well as maintain stamina throughout the course of a full match. While you can perform some tennis quickness drills on the court, you can do others in a gym or on a track.
Line Drill
This line drill is designed to improve your speed and quickness while on the court. Start by standing at the baseline in a running stance. On your coach's mark, run to the first service line, touching it with your hand before running back to the baseline. Touch the baseline and run to center court. Touch the net before running back to the baseline. From there, sprint to the service line on the other side of the court, jumping over the net as you do so. Run back to the original baseline before running across to the baseline on the other side of the court. After running back to the original baseline, you have completed the drill.
Tennis Shuffle Drill
This drill is designed to improve your quickness, as well as your lateral speed. Place four cones in a T shape in front of you. Start at the base of the T. On your coach's whistle, run forward until you hit the top line of the T. From there, shuffle to the right until you reach the end of the T. Once you reach the end, shuffle all the way to the left side. Shuffle back to the center before backpedaling to the base of the T. Repeat this exercise until you are fatigued.
Hand Reaction Drills
Hand reaction drills will improve your quickness and reaction time on the court. Stand 5 feet away from your coach. Have the coach hold a tennis ball in each hand. Without warning, he will throw a ball at you from one of his two hands. Wherever the ball is thrown, you must catch it and roll it back to him, moving quickly into a ready position. As you improve, the speed with which he will throw the balls at you will increase.
Reach Return Drill
This drill is designed to improve your range on the court, as well as your speed. Stand on one side of the court in a ready position. Have your coach hit balls to you on opposite sides of the court. As soon as you run to one side to return a hit, he will hit the ball to the opposite side. Continue the drill for as long as you can or until you become fatigued.
