Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition that causes you to stop breathing periodically while you sleep. Although most severe cases are easy to diagnose, mild cases of sleep apnea can occur unknowingly in individuals who snore loudly or feel constantly tired after a full night's sleep. For best results, combine your herbal alternatives with traditional medical treatment recommended by your doctor.

Types of Sleep Apnea

According to the Mayo Clinic, obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of apnea and occurs when the throat muscles relax during sleep. Central sleep apnea is potentially more complicated and involves the brain's inability to send the proper signals to the breathing muscles. Long-term sleep apnea can cause a number of health complications, including cardiovascular problems and fatigue.

Valerian

The valerian herb is a perennial plant commonly recommended for a variety of sleep disorders. According to studies cited by the Office of Dietary Supplements, valerian is consistently helpful in alleviating a variety of sleep disorders. One study involving 128 volunteers linked the intake of valerian extract to statistically significant subjective improvement in sleep quality, nighttime awakenings and a reduction in the time required to fall asleep. Valerian supplements are generally recommended at a dosage of 400 mg and may cause drowsiness the following morning if taken in excess of 900 mg a day.

Homeopathic Herbal Remedies

The University of Maryland Medical Center lists a number of herbs that professional homeopaths prescribe for individuals suffering from sleep apnea. Spongia is a sea plant that is used in homeopathic formulas to treat respiratory symptoms that are worsened by cold air or lying down. The opium plant is also a common homeopathic ingredient in formulas made for individuals with sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Unlike valerian, which can be taken on its own in an extract supplement, spongia and opium should only be taken in quantities determined by a personalized formula prepared by a homeopathic doctor.

Considerations

Due to the potential severity of a sleep apnea condition, you should talk to your doctor before proceeding with an alternative therapy. Aromatherapy, chamomile tea and lavender essential oil application may also play a beneficial role in improving your sleep quality, potentially aiding your sleep apnea.
